Exterior Mirror

Today, modern exterior vehicle mirrors are much more than just mirrors.

MCD Elektronik has developed an automated testing solution for more than 30 different mirror configurations. Immediately prior to shipment, the respective variants are reliably identified, tested, and verified against defined quality criteria in a very short amount of time.
Challenges and Concept

Modern vehicle side mirrors combine numerous functions. As a result, the customer’s mirror model offers over 30 different configuration options, all of which must be thoroughly tested before delivery.

Camera systems monitor lighting functions and mirror positions, while actuators, folding mechanisms, and electrical functions are tested automatically.

  • Adjustment and folding functions
  • Mirror heating
  • EC anti-glare glass

A camera system detects lighting functions, symbols, and the position of the mirrors.

  • Turn signals
  • Lane Change Assist
  • Ambient lighting

Different equipment features are automatically detected and specifically checked.

Even what doesn't exist counts.

The negative check ensures that features that are not installed cannot be activated. It also checks for what is missing.

Test Methods Used and Results

To ensure product quality, the EOL test bench combines optical, mechanical, and electrical testing methods.

Visual Inspections
Camera-Based Detection of Lighting Functions
Analysis of Mirror Positions
Inspection of the Mirror Glass
Mechanical and Electrical Tests
Motion Test of the Drives
Angle Measurement of the Folding Mechanism
Current consumption of the motors
Functional and Quality Assessment
Evaluation of Complex Trim Levels
Reliable Detection of Defect Patterns
Reproducible results
Smart Testing Concept

The intelligent test logic enables reliable testing with short cycle times. This ensures that all relevant functions are thoroughly validated while maintaining high process stability.

01
Features
A particular challenge is the wide variety of exterior mirror configurations. Different equipment features are automatically detected and specifically inspected.
02
Negative screening
A negative check ensures that functions that do not exist cannot be enabled.
03
Traceability via MES Integration
Inspection data and results are transmitted directly to the customer's system via the MES integration.
Flexible use for mass production and spare parts production

The integration with the customer's system and full traceability result in a future-proof solution that reliably handles both production peaks and future requirements for spare parts manufacturing. Easy conversion between left and right mirrors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQS

An EOL (End-of-Line) test station inspects fully assembled exterior mirrors directly at the end of the production line. All functions are tested and documented to ensure 100 percent quality assurance.
The testing system covers a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and optical tests. These include mirror adjustment, folding test, mirror heating, turn signals, ambient lighting, EC dimming function, mirror shape, mirror labeling, and the functionality of integrated cameras and driver assistance systems. In addition, the system verifies that features that are not present cannot be activated.
The left and right exterior mirrors of a vehicle model are tested. The mirrors feature numerous equipment options and vary depending on the vehicle variant and market requirements. For each side of the mirror, there can be a total of more than 30 different configurations. These include various mirror lenses, lighting functions, camera systems, driver assistance features, and country-specific designs and labeling.
Rising production volumes and the wide variety of exterior mirror models called for an additional testing solution. The test stand expands existing capacity and enables reliable quality control prior to shipment to the customer.
The test bench was deliberately designed to be flexible. In addition to current series production, the system can be adapted with minimal modifications to accommodate future product changes or spare parts manufacturing, thereby offering a high degree of investment security.
